6.Electoral System in USA & India

(posted on Dec 15,2000)

The recently concluded Presidential election in USA has shown up the many flaws in the county's electoral system.These are:

  • Absence of uniform country-wide laws governing the elections;

  • Faulty and antiquated voting machines which resulted in a large number of votes of doubtful validity;

  • Uncertainty about accountal of 'absentee' ballots;

  • Deadlines which proved unworkable resulting possibly in a clear victor emerging in Florida, and a possible victor becoming the loser.

Against the above,India has a uniform electoral law applicable to the whole country, a statutory Election Commission supervising the elections and simple tried and tested Electronic voting machines, being progressively used for fool-proof registration of voter intent.

USA can adopt some of the above with advantage rather than attempting to re-invent the wheel!At least in future elections confusion as in the recent one can be avoided.
