A breath of fresh air

by Lavanya D J

MAHE MIC family has grown this year. August 1 marks the day that Manipal Institute of Communication threw open its gates to the new batch of students. The freshers looked lost at first, but not for long as their seniors welcomed them to the town.

Freshers included BA/BSc students. The institute has started a new undergraduate course, BA/BSc in media studies and information sciences. This is a three-year, six-semester degree course, which offers specialization at the end of the second year. Students can opt for media studies or information sciences in their final year, which would provide them with a BA or BSc degree depending on specializations. They also have an opportunity to study two foreign languages French and German.

With a map of Manipal in their hands, students of the first year BA/BSc’s and MS were taken around Manipal. Their first stop ironically was End Point, which is every student's favourite hangout. After all of them left this hyped and instantly likeable place they were taken to Endless Point which is at the other end of Manipal. After most of the excitement fizzled out they were shown the architectural beauty of the Venugopal temple.

Their last stop was at the sound studio, which is located next to the planetarium. Here the seniors got a chance to actually interact and break the ice. What followed was a tug of war between the bachelors and the second year post-graduate students, against the first year master students, in a game of dumb charades. However, after the usual bonding speech made by the seniors we had our usual tummy fillers. Chole batore, sandwiches, gulab jamoons made up the special cuisine!

Soon the MIC students will be moving into the Alloy foundry compound. Admissions for this course was conducted at an All India level.

For many of the students this is the first time they are away from home. The seniors hope that the juniors settle down quickly and become part and parcel of the MIC family.

Siddarth Vankar of first year B.A./ B.Sc. says, “ Manipal is a really cool place. And I have adjusted very soon especially with the help of my seniors.”

A special pooja was organised on the August 10 to make an auspicious start.
