Here's a review for Grand Theft Auto 2
I'll start by saying that although Grand
Theft Auto 2 is a very good game, it's
basically nothing more than a big old
expansion pack. Here's what gets me. If
they had released it as an expansion
pack, it would have gotten much better
reviews because it does so much for the
game. But instead, since they called it a
sequel, it got mediocre reviews. Well, I'm
going to tell you exactly why you should
go buy this game.
First of all, some still complain about the
graphics, ignoring the fact that the
graphics are much better than in the
original, what with colored lighting and all.
I personally love the engine, because for
people like me (who have older
computers), the game runs very smoothly
indeed. I actually had to turn the frame
rate limit on even on my P-200 with a
Voodoo 2 and 64 MB ram. Not many new
games can run smoothly on my computer,
so I was very happy with it. Next, there are
new elements to the gameplay;
specifically, there are seven gangs in the
city to fight against or ally with. The
missions are mainly set up the same way
as the original, but the police aren't as
easy to avoid, as SWAT teams and
special agents will be brought in to hunt
you down. There are new weapons to
blast your way through the city, and they
are scattered in alleys throughout. The
sound is once again top-notch; the city
sounds are excellent and the soundtrack is as awesome as
in the original. There are also more vehicles; 120 models,
and they now have more realistic physics, including a better
turning system and catching fire in a realistic manner when
getting shot or after crashing. There's also an improved a
saving system, and although it takes quite some time to get
to a save point, it's an improvement over the
save-between-each-level setup of the original.
All in all, Grand Theft Auto 2 is a very fun game to play, and
the only real problem is the graphics engine. Sure, there are
other small problems here and there, but they are merely
annoyances, and most of them are annoyances from the first
game that have been toned down.
