Jabalpur well known as "Sanskardhani" is located at the
geographic center of India. It
is situated on the bank of holy river Narmada and is surrounded by rocky hills. Its name is
derived from Saint Jabal ( in Arabic Jabal means rocks). Jabalpur is famous for the
Marble Rocks. The Narmada river flows on Marble Rocks and creates a foggy waterfall
when falling through a height of several meters.
Earlier to Mughal Emperor occupation Jabalpur was kingdom of Gond king
Madan Singh and was later ruled by Gond Princess Rani Durgavati. Madan Mahal was
constructed by Gond Emperor which is one of the memorable places to visit.
The Jabalpur University was renamed Rani Durgavati University in the year 1980 paying her a tribute.
Jabalpur is one of the biggest education centers of Central India. It has three universities - Rani Durgavati University, Jawahar Lal Nehru Krishi Vishva Vidyalaya and Maharishi Vaidik Vishva Vidyalaya and many colleges related to medical, engineering, commerce, science, management, law and other fields.
Jabalpur has several Defence factories like Vehicle Factory, Grey Iron Foundry, Gun Carriage Factory and Ordinance Factory. It has High Court of Madhya Pradesh and Head Office of the Madhya Pradesh Electricity Board (MPEB). In sports Snooker ( Billiards ) was first designed by Col. Sir Navil Francis at Jabalpur in the year 1875.
