The DEMUs have made a dent into the inter-city public transport scenario in Punjab, India too. Since long, Punjab had traditonally been the bus operators' fiefdom. There are cities - small and big every 30-40 km spread out over Punjab. The trains linking them were far too infrequent and had longer stoppages than buses.

All this changed with the introduction of the DEMUs by the railways. The DEMUs with their remarkable pick up, shorter braking distance and trouble-free operation are much more faster, cheaper and comfortable than the traditional buses for intercity travel. Today they run 86 trains over 6722 km everyday! The DEMU services have proved immesely popular here in Punjab with the trains running packed to capacity! These DEMUs have been manufactured by Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, India. DMUs are also manufactured by Alstom, Siemens, Adtranz, Hitachi etc worldwide.

The DEMU Car Shed at Jalandhar City is the first Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) Car Shed on Indian Railways. The DEMU services were introduced in 1994 on the Firozepur Division of Northern Railways. There are 90 DEMU cars and two Rail Buses in this Shed. The Shed is headed by a Divisional Mechanical Engineer (DME) who is assisted by 203 men to run the Shed. The Shed is under the overall administrative control of the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Firozepur Division, Northern Railway. For technical matters, the DME reports to Sr Divisional Mechanical Engineer (Diesel), Ludhiana, Firozepur Division, Northern Railway.
