Seminar on "Exploring GIS for Business", on Saturday, 18^th November 2000, at Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Ahmedabad.

A seminar on "Exploring GIS (Geographic Information System) for Business" is being organised jointly by the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry & Indian Society of Geomatics-Ahmedabad Chapter (ISG-AC), on Saturday, 18^th November 2000, between 9-30 a.m. to 5-30 p.m., at the premises of the chamber.

The objective behind organising above seminar is to, create awareness amongst the business community in general & industries in particular, on GIS, which is a distinct application of Information Technology.

Some of the applications of GIS, for different industry segments, are listed below:

• Mapping & planning of an industrial unit - It helps identify the perfect place for setting up an industrial unit or its outlet, taking into consideration the raw material, resources, connecting transportation links etc.
• Identifying the resources available at a place like power, water, man power, banking facilities, status of industrialisation, state of infrastructure, rules and regulations of the local Government, subsidies available etc.
• Marketing activities of an industry by suggesting locations of distribution outlets or service centres, with the help of spatial information like distribution of population / customers, their economic status, priorities, tastes, competitors position, etc.
• Determining the best approach road / rail links for deciding marketing strategy. The spatial view, provided by remote sensing satellites, give a clear idea in identifying the best or the shortest route of transportation - rail, road or airways. This could prove very useful to transport agencies, courier companies etc.
• It is also helpful to the Insurance Companies in as much as determining the exact loss occurred to any property due to the accident.
• For Tourism & related industries it can be helpful in as much as site selection for resorts, recreation parks, hotels etc.

Shri Bimal Shah, Hon’ble Minister of State for Information Technology, Government of Gujarat, has been invited to be the Chief Guest on the occasion. Prof. N. V. Vasani, Advisor to the Chief Minister, Gujarat on Science & Technology, has been invited to provide Key-Note Address & Shri Rambhadran, Additional Chief Secretary, Technical Education, who is the President of the Indian Society of Geomatics, has kindly consented to deliver the Theme Address in the Inaugural Session.

Shri J. S. Rana, Secretary, Information Technology, Govt. of Gujarat & Chairman, Gujarat Informatics Ltd. and Shri M. Sahu, Commissioner, Information Technology, Govt. of Gujarat and Managing Director, GIL, have been invited to preside over the Technical Sessions I & II respectively, which will be held after Lunch.
