Mind over matter...

Education, in Jamshedpur, has always been a primary concern, whether at the grass root level or in any special field of study. As the city grew and prospered, several schools and colleges were established with generous financial and material support from Tata Steel. While the company has a large education department which runs 28 primary, middle and high schools in the city catering to over 30,000 students, many other schools and colleges for specialised training such as an art college, a medical college and an engineering institute make the city a well established educational centre.

The renowned Xavier Labour Relations Institute is a centre of learning that draws ambitious scholars from far and wide. After their two-year course at this august business school, their skills honed and techniques perfected, they leave to take the reins of industry.

The Technical Training Institute, the first of its kind in India, was set up, because the founders realised, that for Indian industry to be truly independent, human resources would  have to be tapped. An entire generation of technicians would have to be trained to operate the steel plant on its own. Today, the graduates of this institute, rated the finest in India, serve not only Tata Steel, but steel plants elsewhere as well.

Over the years, various private and public schools have come up all over the city. One such, is the Sacred Heart Convent shown in the picture. Besides schools such as this, many private socities run schools for children from various communities.
