The industrial nerve-centre...
The industrial society of Jamshedpur evolved around one great multiplier : steel. In the process, Jamshedpur has become a pulsating nerve-centre of industry, embracing an ever-widening spectrum of enterprises that the nation is proud of. A place where the fruits of technology, work ethics, pride in achievement and enterprise have made a tiny city a great metropolis in the industrial map of India.
The Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Limited (Telco), with its units at Jamshedpur and Pune, is the largest private sector company in India. It is also the country's largest automobile manufacturer, rolling out annually more than 100,000 heavy, medium and light commercial vehicles. Starting operation in 1945, Telco collaborated with Daimler Benz in 1954 to manufacture commercial vehicles called Tata Mercedes Benz which were later marketed under the Tata brand name.The company's Jamshedpur unit also manufactures construction equipment including excavators and cranes.
The Tinplate Company of India Limited (TCIL) is an associated company of Tata Steel. A pioneer in the indigenous manufacture of tinplate sheets, TCIL has its works in Golmuri, Jamshedpur, and registered office at 4,Bankshall Street, Calcutta. The works has two units - the Hot Dip Plant which has a capacity of more than 100,000 tonnes per annum, and the Electrolytic Tinplate and Tin Free Steel Plant with a capacity of more than 90,000 tonnes per annum.
Tata-Yodogawa Limited was promoted by Tata Steel with Yodogawa Steel Works Ltd and Nissho Iwai Corporation, Japan, for the production of steel-based and cast iron rolls. The company, with works in Gamharia (16 km from Jamshedpur), has also know-how agreement with a leading Austrian roll company to manufacture centrifugally cast rolls for the first time in India. It also manifactures steel ingots and pellets. Through its programmes of continuous upgradation and modernisation, Tata Yodogawa has achieved 100 per cent capacity utilisation. It is currently exporting more than 10 per cent of its total production and has an annual turnover of over Rs 50 crores.
Tata-Robins-Fraser Limited (TRF) was promoted by Tata Steel and Associated Cement Companies Limited at Jamshedpur, in collaboration with Hewitt Robins Incorporated, USA, and the General Electric Company plc, UK. TRF is a leader in the execution of projects involving design and manufacture of wide range of equipment for conveying, stacking, blending, reclaiming and processing bulk raw materials for core sector industries. The company has diversified into new areas of manufacture like minig vehicles and stamp charging machines to name a few-for steel plants, coke ovens and coal washeries.
The Tata Pigments Limited was incorporated on 2nd April, 1959. The Company which is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Steel, manufactures synthetic red and yellow oxides of iron, which are used as pigments in paints, plastics, rubber, building materials, paper, tiles, cosmetics, leather, printing inks and other products. Tata Red, Tata Black, Tata Green and Tata Yellow powders have also been specially developed for floors.
The Timken Company, has its head office and plant in Jamshedpur. The Timken Plant which went on stream in March 1992, manufactures world-class tapered roller bearings for railways, automotives, farm tractors and general industrial applications. Made with the world's leading tapered roller technology developed by The Timken Company, USA, it expresses India's new aspiration for global excellence.
The Indian Steel and Wire Products Limited (ISWP), is one of the first companies to come up in Jamshedpur. It is a pioneering organisation in the field of steel-wire rods and engineering products. Its products include Mild Steel, low and high Carbon steel, Tiscon Steel, Dual Phase Steel and Electrode Quality Wire Rods. Today ISWP is known as the best laid out wire drawing mill in Asia.
Jamshedpur Engineering and Machine Manufacturing Co. (Private) Ltd. (JEMCO) was founde in 1936. Beginning as a heavy engineering fabricating unit, it diversified into the manufacture of rolls in 1939 and produced its first roll in 1940, with technical knowhow from Belgium. JEMCO's pioneering role in this direction was significant in supporing and setting up numerous steel-based industries and rolling mills, thereby helping to spearhead India's growing technological self reliance. Today, JEMCO is equipped to produce a comprehensive range of rolls and general castings in cast iron, alloy, spheroidal graphite iron and steel. Modern lathes and roll grinding machines ensure finishing to the most stringent dimensional tolerances.
