DIAGNOSIS OF KIDNEY/URINARY STONE

Tests are done to

1 diagnose / confirm the presence of a stone

2 To determine the size of stone

3 To know the location of the stone

4 To assess the backpressure changes and damage to the kidney.

The initial investigations done are

1 Plain X ray of abdomen and pelvis.

2 Ultra sound study of the urinary system.

3 Urine analyses.

Having confirmed the presence of stone by above tests IVP is done. IVP is intravenous pyelogram ; as the name suggests a dye is injected into the vein and serial x-rays are taken at regular intervals as the dye is getting excreted by the kidney.

This examination can give the precise location of the stone, the blocking of the urinary passage can be visualized and the kidney functioning can all be visualized. In addition any other abnormality of the urinary system may also be delineated.

Additional blood and urine analysis are done to rule out or confirm any metabolic/ hormonal problem.
