WHAT   ARE   KIDNEY STONES?

Simply put kidney stones are concretions in the urinary system tract. Urinary system consists of the two kidneys which form the urine, this urine than passes along the two ureters, one each from each of the kidney, to flow into the urinary bladder. From the urinary bladder the urine is passed outside via the urethra as shown in the animation below.

The urine consists of dissolved solid waste. The solid waste is an end product of the normal functioning of the body.  For some reason the dissolved solid waste forms crystals. A large collection of crystal clumps can form a stone. The stone may take weeks to years to form. They may go on forming silently before causing any problem. This is the reason why many patients when told of their diagnosis say “ But doctor I never had a stone problem before.”

Chemically the most common type of stone in calcium in combination with oxalates or phosphate. Less comment are struvite stone (caused by infection in the urinary tract), uric acid cystine stone.
