Limitations of Ultrasonography.
- Ultrasonography is not particularly useful
in the lungs because air causes a great deal of artifact.
- Diagnostic images sometimes cannot be
obtained because of the patients' build (particularly in obese or kyphotic patients).
- Ultrasound image will not be of diagnostic
importance in scans of abdomen if there are excessive bowel gases.
- Of all types of imaging in radiology,
ultrasonography is the most operator dependent. In the hands of experts, the technique
looks easy, but both performing and interpreting the examination can be extremely
difficult, and if the result of the examination does not fit with the clinical picture, a
more experienced operator may be the answer.
