TABLE TENNIS ON THE NET | ||||||
When it comes to international level TT, one cannot look beyond Chetan Baboor to provide the sparks. Indeed, Chetan has matured and takes on any opposition with confidence. But even he has not been able to win consistently at the higher levels. It has been a ‘well played, bad luck’ situation for him time and again. Maybe he needs full-time exposure to the international scene. Finding a sponsor has always been a problem in this country and one hopes that this shining beacon will also not fade away like many a promising player in the past. An optimist would look at his superb performance in the Asian TT tournament in Pune in 1997 and hope for similar feats in the years to come. Pune TT Pune has several champions who shine at the National level. With the end of the era of Sujay Ghorpade , the responsibility of holding on to the tradition falls on the young shoulders of Bhushan Thakur, Rohit Choudhari and Rajesh Shelar. Bhushan has improved by leaps and bounds to be ranked as high as fifth on the Indian circuit. This hard-working and sincere paddler is sure to go places in the years to come. Rajesh had a lean year in 1998 due to personal reasons and will make a comeback bid of sorts in 1999. Rohit has shown the best improvement this year. He even has a win over the highly ranked Bhushan on the Pune circuit this year. The Mumbai scene: Mumbai does not have much to crow about. Not with the exit of stalwarts like Kamlesh Mehta. S Sriram and S Ramaswamy are still fighting but for how long? Mumbai has lost its hold on the state Table Tennis scene. |
