KING GEORGE ROYAL INDIAN MILITARY SCHOOL/COLLEGE(KGRIMC),as these
schools were previously known, were established by the British
government out of the patriotic fund instituted by the KING
GEORGE V and KING GEORGE VI with a view to provide education to
the son of defence personnel and to prepare them for careers in
the ARMED FORCES.
The oldest of KGRIMC's were established in 1925 at
JULLANDHAR(punjab) and JHELUM(now in pakistan).These colleges
were established as a welfare measure to provide educational
& physical training to the son's of JCO's and other ranks of
armed forces.Later in the year 1930 one more school was started
at AJMER in Rajasthan.
The son's of officers, both KCIO's and ICO's were not eligible for
admission to these schools. In 1944 these schools were raised to
the status of colleges.
With the end of world war II two more KGRIMC's were started ,one
at BELGAUM (karnataka) in the year 1945 and other at
BANGALORE(karnataka) in the following year.
After the independence these schools were called KING GEORGE'S
MILITARY SCHOOL(KGMS's).After the partition of India in 1947,the
school at Jhelum went to Pakistan. The school was first shifted to
NAOGONG(Madhya Pradesh) and later to CHAIL(Shimla Hills,Himachal
Pradesh) and one more school was started at DHOLPUR(Rajasthan) in
1962.To fall in line with the requirements and challenges,KGMS's
were reorganised as residential public schools in 1952 on the
recommendation of KUNZRU commitee and were renamed as only
MILITARY SCHOOLS(MS) in the same year.
Prior to the conversion of these schools into military
schools, the entitled students were sponsered by the regimental
centres concerned,i.e student's father's regiment.This system is
still prevalent.However,on becoming Military Schools,the son's of
defence officers and civilians became entitled for the admission
as "paying students".The scope and curriculum were
suitably modified. These schools were affiliated to the University
of Cambridge and the boys were prepared for the senior cambridge
certificate. On reorganization, these schools were known as KING
GEORGE'S SCHOOLS(KGS).In view of the change in the educational
scenario they were affiliated to Central Board of Secondary
Education(CBSE,NEW DELHI) .In 1962 the KGS's were redesignated as
MILITARY SCHOOLS and hence the individual schools assumed their
present names i.e,
Normally the students were admitted at the age of 12 or 13
years. They were expected to pass the INDIAN ARMY SPECIAL
CERTIFICATE,equivalent to matric, By the time they reached 18
years of age.The students were then enrolled in their father's
regiment. Some of them were screened and interviewed for admission
to the kitchner college, nowgong in Madhya Pradesh with a view of
preparing them for the admission to the INDIAN MILITARY ACADEMY
(IMA), DEHRADUN(Uttar Pradesh),from where they were commissioned
as officers.
Initially these schools had British officers as
commandant/principal and the teaching staff were Indian
officers,warrant officers,Junior commissioned officers(JCO's) and
non commissioned officers(NCO's).There were some civilian masters
too.The subordinate staff were partially military personnel and
partially local civilians. They all were a devoted lot of people
and brought up the students in an excellent way.
After the independence military officers as well as civilians are
being appointed as principal of these schools and are ably
supported by team of dedicated faculty members.During those
days, these schools attracted the richest industrialists and upper
crust families to admit their wards in military schools while
they could well afford to educate their children either abroad or
other well known schools. The unique blend of well honed
traditions, first rate scholarship and all spheres of personality
development was & is the epitome of military schools.
The syllabus included English,Hindi,Mathematics,Geography,General
knowledge and religious teaching. This system was continued till
the end of the world war II.
Presently these schools are affiliated to CBSE and are directly
under the control of MINISTRY of DEFENCE,INDIA.The local
administration is under the respective station commander. The
schools are in military accomodation in cantonments.
The present military schools are run on PUBLIC SCHOOL lines, have
larger number of subjects and prepare their students upto XII
standard The students are encouraged to join defence forces
through the NATIONAL DEFENCE ACADEMY(NDA),Pune.Others who wish to
continue their studies join college of their choice. The schools
provide excellent facilities for games, sports and
extra-curricular activities. From the very begining the schools
have provided adequate sports facilities. The day begins with P.T
and simple drill & outdoor activities.P.T and games are
compulsory for all students and they are conducted under
supervision of the members of staff.
these schools have become more than a seat of learning.Itis a
world into itself, private, cloistered with its own spacious dining
halls,well stacked libraries,swimming pool,hobby classes &
rooms of residence with common bathrooms, huge playgrounds with
acres of gardens. The boys have become egalitarian and forward
looking with sons of rich, royal families and children from humble
begining rubbing shoulders in spirit of competition The monopoly
of academics is broken with sports facilities &
extra-curricular activities not only in school premises but also
in NCC and inter school competitions. These schools have Junior as
well as Senior divisions of NCC for all the wings hence preparing
the boys for NCC 'A' and 'B' certificates.More or less NCC is
compulsory for all the students. These schools provide good
facilities for outdoor games such as football,
basketball, volleyball, hockey, cricket etc. and indoor games such
as boxing, table tennis, carrom, chess etc.In cocurricular
activities debate, dramatics, extenpore etc. are regular feature
hence keeping the students socially healthy.
These schools have produced some national level sportsmen. In
addition to games and sports, school organizes cycle
expeditions, visit to important historic places and picnics under
supervision of staff.
The school provides smart uniforms and sports wear. They also have
comfortable & smart MUFTI clothing for the students.
The local MILITARY HOSPITALS provides medical care including
hospital facilities when required.
Most of the students of erstwhile KGRIM Schools joined defence
services .At the begining of the second world war in 1939 the
Indian army expanded fast and this provided excellent oppurtunity
to the students for promotion at all levels. They went to war
alongwith their units to overseas theatres and some earned high
decorations envied by even the most decorated people of
forces. All these ex students of KGRIMC's were known for their
devotion to duty, discipline and comradeship as they are know. Some
of them rise to high rank of general and equivalent in AIR FORCE
& NAVY.
The boys of present military schools are keeping up those
standards of achievements in the defence services as well as in
industry, business and civil services. Some of them own and run
their own industries including large factories and firms.
At present military schools continue to bring up their students
in very well adjusted and disciplined manner so that the students
will be excellent leaders in various walks of life.
These schools have come a long way since their establishment and
still a lot needs to be done to make it into nursery of potential
armed forces officers of the future, turning out true leaders out
of raw minded new entrant children who will bring glory to their
Alma mater and the Nation.
The students of these schools are known as "GEORGIANS".
Presently we have two chapters of Georgian association,i.e ex
military school students association. With their tradition of high
discipline, comradeship, and national pride The Georgians have
potential to provide excellent military leaders. The associations
Delhi and Pune chapters have laid the foundation stone of
organization which can provide facilities for mutual benefits and
advancements of the Ex as well as present GEORGIANS
