 REC LOCATION

    The Calicut REC is located on a campus near Chathamangalam script 22 Km. east of Calicut City, in Kozhikode district.The campus extends for a length of script 1.5 Km. along the Mukkam Kunnamangalam Road and covers an area of script 120 hectares in picturesque landscape at the foot hills of the Western Ghats. The Mukkam Road leading to the college branches off after the 16th Km. of the Calicut-Wynad Road and passes through the campus. 

     Calicut (renamed as Kozhikode),once the capital of the powerful Zamorins, is an age old commercial town which still maintains its commercial traditions.Its virgin beaches, aquamarine waters and gentle swaying palm trees provide the most salubrious tonic for the mind and body.

    The Portugese led by Vasco-da-Gama first landed in India at Kappad near Calicut on 27 May, 1498. They were the first Europeans to reach India, via the sea route around the southern cape of Africa. Later the Dutch, the French and the British came to its shores. Today, Calicut is a bustling commercial city.The city is famous for block printed cotton cloth (Calico), gold ornaments, halwa and dried banana chips. The legendary S.M. Street (Sweet Meat Street) is a major shopping centre in the city. The other important shopping centres are on Mavoor Road and M.M. Ali Road.

    Sightseeing

    The beautiful beach at Kapad is shallow, studded with rocks and has plenty of trees. Mananchira Square is the heart of the city where important institutions like the Town Hall, Public Library and Calicut's oldest building the Commonwealth Trust Office are located. The Mananchira (palace tank of King Mana-Vikrama) is now a modern architectural splendour. The other places of tourist interest in the city include Calicut Beach, the Aquarium, the Planetarium, Kalipoika (Boat Club), Thali Temple, and Kuttichira Mosque. 
    The Pazhassiraja Museum is located at East Hill, run by the state Archeological Department, displays ancient mural paintings, antique bronzes and old coins as well as models of temples, megalithic monuments like dolomite cysts and umbrella stones. The Art Gallery is situated next to Pazhassiraja Museum and contains paintings of Raja Ravi Varma. The Krishna Menon Museum has a section in honour of the great Indian leader V.K. Krisha Menon where the Personal belongings and souveniers gifted to this world leader are exhibited. 
     Beypore is 10 Km. southward of Calicut at the mouth of the Chaliyar River, is a small coastal town famous for its country crafts called 'Uru' built by traditional shipbuilders known as Khalasis. The attraction in Beypore is "Pulimuttu" that extends into the sea. Thusharagiri waterfalls is located script 35 kms east of REC (in Kodanchery Panchayath). Pookode lake is a picnic spot on the Calicut-Bangalore Highway, 45 kms away from REC, near Lakkidi (the entry point to Wyanad district).

    Administration

    The local administration of Kozhikode city is by the Municipal Corporation. Calicut Urban Agglomeration has a population of script one million. The city is now declared as a Metro. 

    How to Reach Calicut

    Calicut is well connected to other cities in India by Air, Rail and Road. 

    The Calicut Airport is located at Karipur, 27 Kms. south-east of the city. Regular flights are avilable to Bombay (Mumbai), Bangalore, Madras (Chennai), Goa, Madurai, and Coimbatore, and also to many destinations in the Middle-East which include Sharjah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Bahrain, Doha, Fujairah, Ras-al-Khaimah, and Muscat. The nearby airports are Cochin, Coimbatore and Mangalore.
