Movies

  1. Sholay

Sholay , according to me , is the best action movie Hindi cinema has ever produced. Even now , after so many years , one is amazed to find how everything in the movie blend together so nicely , the characters , the setting , the dialogues. Salim-Javed who co-wrote the script and Ramesh Sippy who directed the film could never match their brilliant effort later on. Gabbar Singh played by Amjad Khan acting in his first film became a household name. The film was inspired by late Akiro Kurosawa's The Magnificent Seven.

  2. Jaane Bhi Do Yaron

The best Hindi movie in comedy , this was directed by the highly talented Kundan Shah and it starred Naseeruddin Shah , Ravi Baswani , Om Puri and Pankaj Kapur. I don't think I have laughed as much as I did when I watched this film. The Mahabharata stage scenes were simply hilarious. Pity they don't make films like this anymore.

  3. Ek Ruka Hua Faisla

An excellent film by Basu Bhattacharya , this one was inspired by Henry Fonda's Twelve Angry Men. A film entirely devoid of songs , it revolved around twelve men called for jury duty in a murder case. The entire action takes place in a single room in which the jury is deliberating. K.K.Raina excels as the lone dissenter who fights for the defendant's cause and gradually brings the others around.

  4. Ankush

N.Chandra's angst-ridden first film with newcomers , this packed a huge wallop and went to become a box-office success.Nana Patekar as the idealistic brooding man who takes to petty crime along with his educated and unemployed friends but later reform thanks to a social worker's(played by Nisha Singh ) help . The film struck a chord with the audience , also the dialogues were well written. N.Chandra went on to make more successful films with top stars but they lacked the passion that was evident in Ankush.

  5. Golmaal

An excellent comedy film , it stars Amol Palekar , Utpal Dutt and Dina Pathak in lead roles. The film is full of gags and Amol Palekar is excellent as a man who goes to desparate lengths to keep his boss from finding out the truth about himself. Utpal Dutt as the boss and Dina Pathak as the 'mother' lend good support.

  6. Deewar

Arguably Amitabh Bachchan's best film , it had all the ingredients of good cinema , excellent performances, unforgettable dialogues and a good script. Everyone still remembers that famous line by the Big B ' Main aaj bhi phenke huey paise nahin uthatha'.It is sad to see the Big B struggling to make a comeback with disaster films like Chote Miya.. and Sooryavansham.

  7. Ardh Satya

A hard-hitting film by Govind Nihalani , it has Om Puri in the lead role of a police officer and Sadashiv Amrapurkar as Shetty , the local mafia don. Ardh Satya explores the corruption in the system , the third degree methods used by the police and finally the frustration faced by honest officers trying to do their duty.

  8. Sadma

Sridevi's best film, here she plays the role of a mentally retarded woman who has the faculties of a five-year old.Played with great elan by Sridevi , she is looked after by Kamal Hassan who manages to cure her of her illness in the process falling in love with her. Only in the end does he realise that he has lost her since she no longer remembers him.

  9. Shiva

This early film by Ram Gopal Verma showed his capability for making engrossing action films. Shiva has some of the best action scenes ever seen in Hindi cinema. Nagarjuna as Shiva is convincing as the collegian who is forced to take recourse to violence and Raghuvaran as the psychopathic local hoodlum essays his role well. One scene I particularly remember is when Amala is kidnapped and being taken in a jeep, and the jeep halts to allow a train to pass only to reveal Nag and his men standing in a line and blocking their way.

  10. Ghayal

Raj Kumar Santoshi's first film ,it was a runaway success . Sunny Deol as the angry young man who escapes from jail with three friends and takes the Commissioner of Police hostage to avenge his brother's death is convincing. Om Puri as the investigating officer lends an authentic touch to the film .
