"GRAMIN
VIKAS
EVAM
PARIYAVARAN"a
monthly magazine, in Hindi, was started and the first issue was released
by the Chief Minister of U.P. The inspiring force behind the publication
was the fact that development programmes initiated by the government, for
the rural areas, were not improving the rural health of the poor farmers,
including the schedule caste, schedule tribe and backward classes. The
magazine was published with the sole objective of giving the deprived lot
the adequate & requisite information & guidance on self employment
activities, loan procurement & procedures, adoption of appropriate
eco-friendly technologies, development of rural market, and ways to overcome
the problems of rural skilled artisans.

A new initiative to bridge the communication gap
in the environmental activities being pursued at ERL- the R&D wing
of the society, was undertaken with the publication of the first issue
of "Jagriti",
a
quarterly New Letter. The imperatives of undertaking this activity stem
from the fact that an authentic version of science communication to provide
the first hand information to all those concerned with the affairs of the
ERL, was necessitated since long as the informations contained in new papers
etc. do not reflect the true and complete state of affairs.

A monograph titled "PesticideResiducesinEnvironment"
was
published by the society and released to the nation by HE, The President
of India, Shri R. Venkat Raman. The modern agricultural technologies that
promised to arrest the shortage of food grains and usher in an era of self
sufficiency has brought along serious environmental problems. The monograph
is a compilation of the views of different scientists on the varying aspects
of pesticide pollution/residues in environment.

The Environmetal Research Laboratory has successfully
developed a Low Cost Water Filter Technology. The filtering device, at
the most economical cost, is capable of eliminating not only pathagenic
bacteria but also metals like Iron, Cadmium, Zinc, Nickel, Lead & Copper
upto 95%. The device has been totally indigenous without using the conventional
Iodine or U.V. radiation sources and therefore, has an edge over the existing
devices which are either expensive or power based, serving a limited section
of the society. The imperative of developing a device for the rural population
stems from the fact that 80% of the total population (majority of them)
is deprived of potable water. Futher, the entire northeast region is highly
exposed to the problem of iron contamination in water. This device should
serve as a shot in the arm of the country in making a significant breakthrough
to the existing problem of potability of water.
