South Point is Kolkata’s first co-educational school. It was founded on 1st April 1954 by Satikanta Guha and Pritilata Guha at 16 Mandeville Gardens,Calcutta-19. South Point,affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE), was upgraded to the Higher Secondary level with effect from 1st April 1960. The present high school building started functioning from 8th April 1970. This school,which started with only 20 children,has presently about 13000 students,325 teachers,and 225 members of non-teaching staff. It was the world’s largest school from 1984 to 1992,according to the Guiness Book of World Records. Till today,the school has an excellent academic as well as extra-curricular record. The School Motto,Courage to know,is a tribute to all those who,in the face of blind prejudice,religious bigotry,social ostracism and even death,refused to give up their search for truth.
