Medical Matrix
Don't miss this site! It's a thorough listing of the best medical information on
the web - around 3,000 links in all - arranged by medical specialty. Each
listing includes a brief description, and, for many sites, a star rating. One of
the best starting points for an physicians on the internet.
Free
Medline from HealthGate
HealthGate is one of a number of sites offering free access to the vast Medline
database. Unlike most, however, you don't have to go through any sign-on
procedure.
The
Merck Manual
The 16th Edition (1992) of this classic diagnosis reference is presented online,
fully searchable.
Medis Medi-Search
This database indexes indexes abstracts and articles from a number of leading
medical journals with an online presence. The listings generated link directly
to the online articles.
HotBot
Although this is not exclusively a medical resource, the HotBot index is one of
the most powerful currently on the web, indexing more than 50 million web pages.
If you're looking for the home page of a medical society, hospital or journal,
you may find it faster to search from here than to go to a medical page. Tip:
Normally, HotBot matches separate words. To find matches for a phrase, put it in
double quotes.
Multimedia Medical Reference
Library
This site contains links to numerous medical "bells and whistles"
sites -- medical software, audio clips, images and movies. Just the thing to
justify the cost of that multimedia computer.
Conference
Listings
Just enter a keyword, and a country and this site will provide you with long
list of conferences. You can also search
by specialty
Doctor's Guide to
Medical Conferences and Meetings
A large listing of upcoming conferences on a variety of medical topics.
MedWorld
Research Corner - Journals
This site, courtesy of Stanford University, includes an impressive list
of online journals, including a brief summary of what you can expect to find
after you've clicked that mouse button.
American
Medical Association Journals
This site provides access to a number of peer-reviewed journals, chief among
them being JAMA. Access is free, but you must register your name in order to
read the online journals. Articles and abstracts are all searchable.
Medical Journal of
Australia
An interesting experiment in peer-reviewed web publishing. Not only does the
journal itself appear online, but readers are also able to read upcoming
articles, along with the opinions of those who reviewed them for publication.
Readers can also participate in the peer review process by submitting their own
opinions for each article.
British Medical Journal
One of the first major medical journals to go online with full text.
New England Journal of Medicine
On-line
Abstracts and selected articles online.
The Lancet
Registration is required to access the site, which contains summaries of
selected articles.
US National Library of Medicine
This site links to a number of online databases, although most are subscription
based. The site also contains a searchable archive of approximately 60,000
historical medical images (available directly at http://wwwoli.nlm.nih.gov/databases/olihmd/olihmd.html.
Many, unfortunately, are presented with a diagonal line through them to avoid
copyright problems.
The
Visible Human Project
In case you missed all the media hype, the goal of the Visible Human Project was
to aquire "transverse CT, MRI and cryosection images of a representative
male and female cadaver at an average of one millimeter intervals." The
male in question was a convict. The female was a 59-year-old woman who had
willed her body to science. This page, at the US National Library of Medicine,
lists numerous links to sites involving the Visible Human Project. For a
technical look at the methods used to turn the Visible Human Project data into
3D images, check out Marching
through the Visible Woman and Marching
through the Visible Man. If you have a browser equipped with Java (and some
time to spare while the information downloads!) be sure to visit The
NPAC Visible Human Viewer, an award-winning site that allows you to move
cutting lines along three axes and see the corresponding cross section. An
impressive demonstration of what's possible with Java.
Mediconsult
The goal of this site is to provide information to patients that will allow them
to be involved in the decision making process for their treatments. It offers
the lay reader well written summaries of important medical research. Areas
currently covered include AIDS, allergies, arthritis, asthma, breast cancer,
diabetes, heart, hypertension, pregnancy complications and prostate cancer.
Mediconsult.com Ltd has offices in Toronto, Montreal, Boston and Bermuda.

the index of biomedical resources at Emory University, this site provides
information on medical manufacturers, distributors and dealers. Also includes
two database of used and new medical equipment and instruments. (The database
accepts only a limited number of words in its searches, so click on the category
listing first to see what your options are.)
