SURGICAL SOCIETY OF DEHRADUN

CONCEPT OF THE SYMBOL

The symbol has three components. The leechi tree, water streams and rivulets taken from Dehradun. The earthen lamp and the Swastika from Indian Mythology. Encircling them are the name and motto of the Society.

The tree represents Surgery and its branches. It is nurtured by streams of knowledge coming from various sources and merging into an river- the river of continuing education and learning.

The lamp represents the ethical consciousness which illuminates the attributes of humanity, humility and professional integrity among the surgeons. The Swastika is a sign of progress and well being. It also denotes the Swastika Yantra, a surgical instrument described by Susruta.

Encircling these are the members of the society represented by the typographical arrangements of words giving the name of the society and heralding its motto. The motto is based on a Upanishad prayer, meaning “May all (whom we treat) be healthy and free from illness.”
