GOAL SETTING:
Is the first step to overt, positive
action. Goals are tracks to run on, a course to take; they are not a substitute
for reality. They are an expression of your noblest qualities... a desire
to be and do your
maximum for God and man.
People who get what they want in life,
do so because they have clear goals, develop plans and schedules for achieving
goals, assume personal responsibility for implementation and following
these plans and schedules, perservere in the face of setbacks. They do
not wait for things to happen to them. They take charge. They find ways
to anticipate future events and Influence them In advance.
Why set goals?
The old saying, "If you don't know
where you are going, any road will take you there", negatively
captures the rationale for estabishing
life goals. Here are important reasons why successful people set goals;
1. GOALS GIVE
DIRECTION IN LIFE :
Give a sense of purpose and a set of
guidelines for living. These provide stability to life when
problems, even major ones erupt.
2. GOALS PROMOTE
ENTHUSIASM :
Individuals, who pursue challenging
but achievable goals are more enthusiastic and motivated to work toward
those goals than people pursuing either too-easy or the too-difficult goals.
Goals guide them where to put the energy and help to operate more effectively
and enthusiastically.
3. GOALS GIVE
A RESULTS-ORIENTATION :-
Goals make people concerned about accomplishment
and progress. Help them focus on results and take the emphasis off activity.
Once people state specific, time-phased, measurable goals, it helps them
to evaluate their performance and progress, enables them to see how far
they have come, helps them take responsibility for their own lives and
actions, brings about the highest probability of accomplishment, self-satisfaction
and joy;generates energy and rewards. Consider your life as a whole and
set goals for each sphere of life; SPIRITUAL, MENTAL, PHYSICAL, FAMILY,
SOCIAL, PROFESSIONAL, FINANCIAL, PERSONAL & RECREATIONAL goals.
4. THINK ABOOT
GOALS AND AMBITIONS FOR THE GLORY OF GOD AND THE SERVICE OF HIS PEOPLE
:
Those who sincerely want to follow
God will also ask. Lord what do You want to do with my life ?
What kind of a person you want me to
be? Everyone receives different answers but the directions
remain the same. Here's one method
for setting goals. But remember, learning a method does not
change lives; using the method does.
1. List all the possibilities, 2. Prioritise, 3. Make a measurable goal statement, 4. Anticipate problems and solutions, 5. Schedule & start now.
Example:-
"I press towards the GOAL to win the
prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus." (PhiIippians
3:1.4).
Here Apostle Paul tells of his determination
to keep going towards achieving his God - given goal of reaching the world
with the gospel. Similarly, many men of God in the history had lived and
worked by setting goals for developing their lives and building God's kingdom.
What's your goal this year, friend ?
In the biblical times, almost everyone
had a goal : Noah to build the ark, Moses to deliver Israel from Egypt
and our Saviour to die on the cross for the salvation of mankind. THINK
!! GOALS!
Yes, its possible,
if you agree with Paul : I can do all things through
Christ who strengthens me."
Philippians 4:13. Amen !!
