Details
of the Courses conducted by the Department of Library and Information Science.
COURSES
The Department of Library Science started
by providing training leading to a Diploma in Librarianship. In the year
1964 a fullfledged Department providing instruction leading to Bachelor
of Library Science (B.Lib.Sc.) was established. In the year 1967 Master's
Degree Course leading to M.Lib.Sc. Degree was introduced. The Department
also offers Ph.D. Programme in Library Science.
B.L.I.Sc.
From the academic year 1997-98, the
nomenclature of the degree changed to Bachelor of Library and Information
Science(B.L.I.Sc.). The earlier B.Lib.Sc. course was first revised in 1978,
so as to strengthen the professional contents and to include the modern
techniques of documentation and information studies. The course was further
revised in 1995-96. Obsolete subjects were dropped and new subjects in
tune with current developments were introduced. The contents of the old
courses were revised.
M.L.I.Sc.
The earlier M.Lib.Sc. degree was a
combination of written papers and dissertation. In the academic year 1998-99,
the M.Lib.Sc. course was revised and converted to a full time Master of
Library and Information Science(M.L.I.Sc.) course, incorporating a strong
Information Technology component in both theory and practicals. Thus, the
students of the Department of Library & Information Science get the
benefit of exposure to the computer applications to library operation.
