In the year 1942, the 5th ILA Conference was held in the University of Bombay. On this occasion Dr.P.M.Joshi then librarian, persuaded the University authorities to start a part time evening course leading to Diploma in Librarianship. Eventually in 1943, the University instituted a training course leading to Diploma in Librarianship at the Fort Campus of the University.

The University of Bombay was the third in the country to institute such a course in early 1940s. Later in 1964, a fullfledged Department of Library Science was established, for providing training leading to Bachelor of Library Science Course, the nomenclature of which was changed to B.L.I.Sc. in the year 1997. From the inception the Department was integrated with the University Library. In 1967, Masters Degree Course leading to M.Lib.Sc. degree was instituted the nomenclature of which was changed to M.L.I.Sc. in 1998.

In 1984, the Department was shifted from the Fort Campus to the Jawaharlal Nehru Library at the Vidyanagari Campus, Santacruz(East) where Classrooms, Teacher rooms and Seminar room were duly provided. The Department is housed in the first floor of the `C' wing of the Jawaharlal Nehru Library building. In the year 1998, the name of the Department of Library Science was changed to Department of Library and Information Science.
